Historical Trauma and Eating Disorders

a talk by Gloria Lucas of Nalgona Positivity Pride

Free

July 19th at 6:30PMThe Eating Disorder Foundation

Space is limited! Please RSVP at info@eatingdisorderfoundation.org or 303-322-3373

For the past 30 years, eating disorders have been represented as a white, middle-class phenomenon. Due to the lack of representation of people of color and indigenous populations with troubled eating, these communities suffer from high rates of undiagnosed conditions, inaccessible treatment and culturally insensitive practices within the eating disorder world/community itself. In this presentation, participants will have the ability to evaluate eating disorders through a social justice lens that centers the experiences of people of color and indigenous descent people. Participants will learn about historical trauma, and the white-thin-cis-hetero industrial complex. Furthermore, the facilitator will explore the legacies of colonialism on self-esteem, body-image, and food.

Sponsored by EDCare and Eating Recovery Center, in collaboration with the Eating Disorder Foundation, Gaudiani Clinic, and Project Heal.

About Nalgona Positivity Pride

Nalgona Positivity Pride (NPP) is a xicana-indigenous body-positive organization that provides intersectional eating disorders education and community-based support for people of color who are struggling with troubled eating and poor body-image. After not seeing her own experiences reflected and the lack of cultural awareness in the eating disorder world, Gloria Lucas started NPP in 2014 out of an urgent need to create a platform for communities of color and indigenous-descent communities who struggle alone. Gloria first-hand experienced the isolation that comes with being a person of color with an eating disorder and the absence of services for low-income people.

NPP’s line of work focuses on uncovering the impacts of colonialism, social oppression, historical trauma and its role in impairing relationships indigenous-descent people have with food and body-image. NPP’s goal is to help people of color and indigenous descent folks find education and resources for self-empowering, resistance, and healing.

About the Facilitators:

Christina Marie is the host of Body Positive Events Denver. Christina was inspired to share her eating disorder recovery story with others in a creative way after overcoming a ten year battle with anorexia nervosa. Her mental health awareness events are an opportunity for individuals to love themselves completely physically, mentally, and spiritually. She loves to share her mantras for self love, create safe spaces for self care, and show you how to overcome adversity in your body/mind through yoga, workshops, and public speaking engagements.

Jamie Kuttenkuler started yoga to complement training for half marathons and other running events. She found so many benefits from yoga that she quickly replaced running with a daily yoga practice. Jamie’s first love was hot yoga, and she completed her 60-hour Yoga Pod Hot Teacher Training & Immersion in December, 2015. She enjoyed teaching so much that she completed her 200-hour certification with Kindness in December, 2016.

Jamie’s classes are alignment-focused and fun. She loves connecting with her students and encouraging them to breathe through a difficult pose.

Jamie lives in downtown Denver with her husband and mini-schnauzer Madchen. When she’s not practicing yoga, you can find her reading, playing her bass guitar, or enjoying one of the many outdoor activities available in the area.

There is insufficient research on the intersection of eating disorders with fertility and pregnancy issues, yet research has shown that 20.7% of patients struggling with infertility have had an eating disorder.
Psychotherapy with this population can reveal shame rooted in unexpected difficulties in conception, pregnancy or early motherhood. The lack of open discussion around these topics increases internalized judgment and self-criticism.
This book focuses on issues arising from challenges conceiving, sustaining a healthy pregnancy, and mother-child bonding in women who have had or currently have an eating disorder.
Discussion examines research linking the presence of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder to fertility issues and experiential exercises exploring how to process this with clients will be outlined. The author shares some personal experiences from her own life and case studies to highlight the depth of these struggles. This book is the only comprehensive guide to addressing, working with, and healing from emotional struggles related to fertility and eating disorders.
