Athlete Workshop Series: Endgame for Recovery
Apr 13 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Endgame for Recovery: Medication Management and the Strategic Return to Sport

  • Describe the psychiatrist’s role on the multidisciplinary team and psychopharmacology as one tool in the recovery toolbox.
  • Identify risk factors specific to athletes, common co-occurring conditions, and barriers to mental health treatment in general, for athletes and for athletes with eating disorders.
  • Evaluate the critical tasks of identifying, assessing, and treating mental health issues in athletes with eating disorders and the complexities that come with this specific population.
  • Emphasize education and communication as essential tools in treating mental health issues of athletes and how this is key to their futures and the future of this work.

Speaker: Amy Laurent, MD – Attending Psychiatrist for Athlete EDGE™ at EDCare

Dr. Laurent is a psychiatrist who grew up in Michigan and completed her undergrad degree at Loyola University Chicago. She went on to complete medical school at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and residency in psychiatry at Good Samaritan Hospital/Banner Health in Phoenix, AZ. Dr. Laurent is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and sees adult clients. She has particular interests in cultural and nutritional psychiatry and believes in healing/treating the whole person: mind, body and spirit. This includes education and support to empower them to live their healthiest and most balanced lives.

Dr. Laurent is happy to be a part of EDCare staff, working within a multidisciplinary model, to provide psychiatric care to patients working toward recovery from eating disorders. Additionally, she is excited to be a part of the Athlete EDGE program to ensure athletes are addressing their mental health needs as much as their physical needs in order to achieve optimum performance in a healthy way. She is a member of the International Society for Sports Psychiatry (ISSP) and working toward additional certification in Sport Psychiatry to better serve this population.
