As Chief Medical Officer at Alsana, Margherita Mascolo, leads the medical component of Alsana’s Adaptive Care Model™. Margherita has over 10 years of hands-on experience and extensive knowledge in the treatment of eating disorders. Prior to joining Alsana, Margherita served as the Medical Director at ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders at Denver Health. She works closely with Alsana’s medical leadership including Chief Nursing Officer, Lyn Goldring on the development and implementation of our medical care. After completing her undergraduate work at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, Margherita earned her medical degree at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center. Her residency was completed in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado in Denver. Margherita is board certified in Internal Medicine, has published multiple peer reviewed articles on the medical complications of eating disorders, travels nationally and internationally to speak on these complications, and has earned her certified eating disorder specialist (CEDS) certification.

In celebration of PRIDE month, we dedicate this workshop to LGBTQ+ community members struggling with disordered eating, eating disorders, and body image. Led by Dr. Lisa Brownstone, this workshop will discuss the current gaps in treatment reported by folx in the LGBTQ+ community, being part of a minority community during COVID, advocating for equal health coverage, and more.

Dr. Brownstone (she/her/hers) is a Visiting Assistant Professor of the Practice at the University of Denver’s Counseling Psychology department. In addition to her work at the University of Denver, she has a small private practice in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Brownstone completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill followed by her predoctoral clinical internship at Denver VA Medical Center and postdoctoral fellowship at Eating Disorder Care (EDCare) of Denver. She stayed on at EDCare of Denver as a licensed psychologist until August 2019and served as their Binge Eating Disorder Track Coordinator. Her areas of clinical and research specialization include disordered eating and body distress, LGBTQ+ health, trauma, weight stigma, couples therapy, and emotion processing. Dr. Brownstone identifies as a social justice advocate psychologist. Outside of work, Dr. Brownstone plays fiddle and guitar, and loves spending time with her family and fluffy dogs

Dr. Cook developed an original line of research examining the etiological role, management, and therapeutic potential of exercise in eating disorders. His education at the Universities of Rhode Island and Florida and a NIMH post-doctoral fellowship at the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute in Fargo, ND allowed him to train under experts in the eating disorder field. This has resulted in presenting research at international conferences (e.g., Eating Disorders Research Society, the Academy for Eating Disorders), chairing conference paper sessions, publications in leading journals (e.g., International Journal of Eating Disorders) and book chapters, and a keynote address at the IAEPD 2017 Symposium.

Dr. Elizabeth Wassenaar is a medical director at Eating Recovery Center/Insight. Dr. Wassenaar is boardcertified in adult and child and adolescent psychiatry, obesity medicine, and is a certified eating disorder specialist (CEDS). She is a member of The American Psychiatric Association, The American Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, The International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, and The Obesity Society. Dr. Wassenaar has published and presented on a variety of topics related to eating disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, and mental health and wellness.

In her role as Chief Nursing Officer, Lyn Goldring oversees and develops the nursing program for all Alsana locations, instituting a philosophy of care based on the Alsana Adaptive Care Model®. For Lyn, nursing is more than a job, it’s a way of life. She believes that developing one-on-one, personalized connections with each client is critical for building the foundations of trust and honesty that is needed for sustained recovery. Lyn is thrilled to be part of a team that shares her passions and commitment to treating the whole person and setting them on a path toward a recovered life. Prior to Alsana, Lyn developed and implemented nursing programs at eating disorder treatment centers across the country. She holds a Bachelor of Nursing degree and is a certified eating disorder registered nurse through the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals.

Meredith Nisbet, MS, LMFT is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and member of the Clinical Response Team with Eating Recovery Center and Insight Behavioral Health, where she enjoys engaging with patients, families, and providers seeking admission nationwide. In addition to her work for ERC-Insight and in her private practice, Meredith also provides education and training on weight stigma and Health At Every Size-informed care around the country. Meredith earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from East Carolina University; she is currently pursuing accreditation as a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist through IAEDP. Meredith resides in Raleigh, North Carolina where she spends her free time listening to true crime podcasts, practicing hot yoga, and snuggling with her dog, Mac.

Andrea Burkley is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor in Denver, Colorado. She provides nutrition counseling and support to clients at her private practice, and works part-time in the acute care setting. She specializes in disordered eating, chronic dieting, eating disorder recovery, and providing support with the management of chronic health conditions. Andrea is passionate about helping others develop a peaceful relationship with food, and practices from a weight-inclusive and Health at Every Size® framework. As the National Director of Alumni and Advocacy, Allison is committed to serving all the alumni of Alsana, and clients of marginalized communities. She has a passion for continuing to help our clients after discharging from our treatment program to continue supporting them along their journey of recovery. As the leader of Alsana’s Social Justice Task Force, Allison and the advocate for the LGBTQ community, POC, BIPOC, and people in larger bodies. Allison is a Certified LGBT Affirmative Psychotherapy Provider, a Certified Transgender Care Therapist, and a member of the LGBTQ community. Previously, Allison has served Alsana as the Director of Regional Outreach for the South, and as a Primary Therapist for the Birmingham location. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and a BA in Administration of Justice from the University of Southern Mississippi before getting her Masters of Social Work from the University of Alabama. Allison is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, and a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist. In her free time, Allison is a huge college football fan (roll tide!) and loves concerts and traveling.

Kara Richardson Whitely is an author, public speaker and adventurer. She took on Africa’s highest peak three times and wrote Gorge: My Journey Up Kilimanjaro at 300 Pounds and The Weight of Being. Gorge is being made into a major motion picture by Amazon Studios with Chrissy Metz (who plays Kate on This Is Us) producing and starring as her. She has been featured in The New York Times and on Good Morning America, The Today Show, CBS’ The Talk and countless other media outlets. She serves as a national Binge Eating Disorder Recovery Advocate for Eating Recovery Center. It is now her mission to share her story and inspire others to take bold steps and move mountains in their lives.
